However, the ghettos in Poland and other parts of what eventually became Nazi-controlled had a defined and definite purpose. Indeed, they were a way to separate and control the Jews that the Nazis wanted to confine and kill.
The ghettos were the places where the Jews went before they were transported to the concentration camps. Over 400 ghettos were established in the countries Germany conquered. Sometimes the ghettos were located in the run down parts of town. They were filthy and very crowded. A lot of times, the Nazi would put 50 people or more in one building.
Groups that were brought to concentration camps and death camps included Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, mentally or physically disabled people, and people who did not agree with the government.
